When you think of Russia, beautiful architecture is not something that comes to mind. Five story concrete buildings are not exactly the stuff of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was not always this way. Just take Peterhof in St. Petersburg.

Peterhof is known as the Russian Versailles. It is located just south of the City of St. Petersburg and is typically accessed by boat. The name means Peters Court in reference to Peter the Great who ordered the palace built.

When you visit Peterhof, a sad fact becomes apparent. The palace is fairly new. This is because the Germans destroyed it when bombing Russia in the Second World War It has been rebuilt using the original plans, but with some modern conveniences.
