In 2006, Money magazine named Austin the second “Best Places to Live” among the big cities. Austin was also labeled as the “Greenest City in America” by MSN. “Greenest” pertains to the efforts of their people to maintain a sustainable living. With both of these positive regards in mind, let’s look at the climate and weather in Austin to see if you’re suited to live in this Texan city.
The climate in Austin is humid tropical, characterized by their moderately cold climate in winter and the hot and humid weather in summer. The hot-and-humid summers in Austin are characterized by a temperature of about 90 degrees F or 32 degrees C.
The summer months of Austin are June to September. Temperature usually falls to 100 degrees F or 38 degrees C on a daily basis. On September 5, 2000, Austin experienced the hottest day in history at 112 degrees F or 44 degrees C. There are about 198 days where Austin experiences a temperature of 80 degrees F or 27 degrees C. Another temperature of over 90 degrees F or 32 degrees C is experienced for another 111 days.
On the other days, you may expect mild and dry weather when winter comes to Austin. On average, there are about 88 days in a year when Austin is below 45 degrees F or 7 degrees C. For another 24 days, the minimum temperature in Austin may not drop below the freezing point.
To date, the lowest temperature in Austin was recorded on January 31, 1949 at -2 degrees F or -19 degrees C. Austin rarely experiences a snowfall, though once a year or so, the city may be hit with an ice storm. When this happens, the roads may be frozen and the city may be shut down for a day.
Climate changes are very evident in Austin because of the extreme weather conditions. Then again, it is indeed better to tolerate the weather changes than experiences more frightening catastrophes in other cities. Tornadoes and thunderstorms, which are very common in the whole of Texas, is very rare in Austin. The point is, Austin’s weather or climate does not define the living condition in the city at all.
