My life in Costa Rica has been an outstanding experience with a variety of adventures and events. I have photographed a number of beautiful and incredible sights and this is just one very small example of how close I live to it all.

You may know we have leaf cutter ants in the jungle. They are very hard workers with a very important job to do and I have a story about the strength and persistence of one of them.

An ant we will call Bill, was travelling along with all of his buddies as they were devastating my favourite flowering tree near my driveway. Bill dropped his leaf to pick up something he thought might be more beneficial to the group, a matchstick, the strong wooden type. He began carrying it upright as if it were a leaf. I think he was a little confused but, of course, maybe I was the only one confused.

With care I picked up the matchstick thinking that I would lessen the load. And incredible as it might seem, Bill did not let go and was picked up along with the match, his little feet still trying to march away.

I carried Bill and the match to the terrace of my house, all this time just holding the match. When placed on the terrace Bill just kept on marching to the beat of his own drum going around the chair legs however remaining on the terrace.

Not faltering for a moment he continued marching around in military precision carrying his treasure. After more than an hour of watching and photographing Bill I could not help but wonder when he would get so tired that he would drop the match as I am sure he was panting by now, and believe me it is really hard to see an ant pant.

Without hesitation he marched around and around in military precision carrying his flag. As a photographer I watched and photographed in amazement for over an hour and couldnt help but wonder when he would drop the match and go on his merry way as he must have been panting by now, not that you can see an ant pant, believe me!

Life is hard for all of us but are you willing and ready to drop a small item to carry one that is monumental? Bill the ant did. What a creature!

Who among us would drop a light load to carry a very heavy one for our team? Think about it and what we can learn from this wonderful creature that we often take for granted.

I use the hotel booking site, Hotwire.com frequently for my travels, most recently when I went to Tampa for New Year’s (InterContinental for $99 per night, not including tax) and Jersey City, New Jersey at the end of January (Westin Jersey City, $129).

I prefer Hotwire to Priceline, because you don’t have to guess on the price. The site is “opaque” - meaning that you must buy the room before you know the name of the hotel. It’s easier to figure out what hotel you might be getting on Hotwire. And you don’t have to go through Priceline’s bidding process, which can drag on if the site rejects your original offer.

Here are some tips if you want to use Hotwire for your next trip:

1. Figure out what hotel you are getting before you buy. Hotwire has clues that makes this easy to do. First, check out the hotel’s amenity list - a group of icons that appear under the hotel’s location. Open up another window in your brower to BetterBidding.com, a forum where frequent Priceline and Hotwire users post lists of what the different hotels offer, as well as their recent buys.

For example, for my Tampa trip, I saw that the hotel I was considering had an airport shuttle icon on Hotwire. Of the four -star Tampa hotels listed on BetterBidding, only the InterContinental offered shuttle service. So I was 99% sure that I was going to end up there.

It takes more time to do this, but if you are like me and want to know where you are staying, it’s worth it.

2. Don’t forget tax. Both Priceline and Hotwire show prices without tax, which can easily add another $20-$30 to your per night rate. Factor this in to your budgeting.

3. It’s great for car rentals too. I’ve found car rentals on Hotwire for as low as $15 a day. What I like about Hotwire’s car rental policy is that it’s more flexible than their hotel purchases and they don’t charge you until you pick up the car (hotel purchases are non-refundable and must be paid immediately).

4. Be realistic about the kind of hotel you are getting. Both Hotwire (and Priceline) specialize in getting rid of unused inventory - the rooms that hotels haven’t sold. These hotels are going to be the larger chains such as Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton that often appeal to business travelers (which is why weekend rates can be so low). If your goal is to stay at the hippest hotel in town, you will be unhappy with Hotwire. Five star properties such as the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental are usually not listed either.

But if you are simply looking for a good deal on a city hotel that has basic four-star amenities, give Hotwire a try. My favorite Hotwire deal came last year when I was able to book my sister a room at the Wynn Las Vegas for $89. She was thrilled with both the hotel and the price

One of the best vacations to take with family and friends to spend some quality time together. Or, if you’re looking for alone time, a drive is a great way to have a peaceful day to yourself. It allows you to see sights and stop in at places of interest, and see the landscape. Travel - road trips are very popular these days.

Checking in with a local travel agent for maps and online is a good way to plot out the course. You may want to consider renting a car. Although this is an extra cost, it will save you wear and tear on your own car. Depending on how many people are going too, you’ll want to be comfortable while driving.

And there are day and weekend trips too. It’s cheaper and easy, and a good way to sightsee around on a Sunday or take a nice drive up the coast or through the state.

Of course, it helps to find a destination first and then to map out places to stop in on the way, like hotels, eateries and tourist spots so that you have some options when going, and freedom to change the trip up if you want.
