A deeply dark and wonderful place, the Black Forest in Germany is what great tales are made of. Aptly named for the dense forest that surrounds the area, those that travel to the Black Forest will hardly forget the many things that they heard and saw there.
The Black Forest area is like a step back in time. From little logging towns to think, heavy food, the region is all about authenticity and a different way of life. Of course, such a beautiful place is on the tourist track as well.
The Black Forest has a long history of logging as you might expect with a forest. Logging is no longer allowed on a big scale, so a new niche has come up. The Black Forest is now known for carved wood cuckoo clocks.
The Black Forest is a hot bed of rumors. From elves to witches to sorcerers, the forest is the basis of many a fairy tale and plenty of folklore. Given the density of the woods, it is not hard to see why such stories and myths have developed.
The tales are certainly interesting, but you probably are going to want something a bit more filling sooner or later. Specifically, we are talking food. From cakes to schnapps, the Black Forest has plenty of the usual German food treats.
To really experience the Black Forest, you need to experience the little towns. The air is so clean it is amazing, so Freiberg is our first stop. It is a beautiful little town and you can rent a bike to cruise around and take it all in.
Pforzheim was originally founded by the Romans as an important mercantile center. There, you will find lots of great handmade jewelry and (of course) plenty of cuckoo clocks. Additionally, this town includes the Technisches Museum, which details the very beginning of life within this area.
Lastly, Triberg is a delight for hikers. This part of the Black Forest comes complete with numerous waterfalls and paths. If you want to give your feet a rest, try renting a bike and go for a cruise.
Much like tasting wine, experiencing the Black Forest is difficult to put into words. You just have to immerse yourself in it. Frankly, it is so powerful and eventful that it should be on your bucket list.
