For most of us, when we think of a winter ski vacation, we feel of a ski chalet in the French or Swiss Alps. However, for the traveler on a budget, the words “alps” and “low-cost” don’t necessarily go hand in hand. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up the fresh mountain air altogether. It just could mean deciding on a various mountain top, like the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia.

When I initially saw the sign on the hostel cork-board in Poland, I did not feel it was doable myself. A day pass, plus accommodations and gear rental for less than 35 Euros? I can not even get a single day pass here in the states for less than 50 dollars a day, (which is about the equivalent, not including accommodation, rentals, or something else.)

During our stay in Serbia in October, our hosts introduced us to three of Belgrade’s top free attractions (Ethnographic Museum is free on Sundays). And while we didn’t get to visit the Great War Island during this trip, our hosts enthusiasm about the island’s summer season was all I needed to justify a return summer trip to Belgrade.

As history and cultural buffs, we always like to pay a visit to the country’s heritage museum when we arrive in a new country, especially a capital city like Belgrade.
