Inverness, commonly referred to as the capital city of the Highlands, was granted city status in two thousand and one and at the moment is the only city in the Scottish Highlands. Unusually the city has no statutory boundaries which creates problems with people estimating population. The estimations are less likely to be accurate because the population of the city is increasing, the city has the highest growth rate of any UK city. One thing we can state with some certainty is that the population of the city is rather content , in 2008 the Telegraph.co.uk took a survey of the quality of life in 189 cities in Britain and the city was ranked fifth. From this we can state that Inverness is a pretty alright place in which to live and this is most probably one of the reasons which make the city immensely popular with tourists. Crucially there is plenty of bed & breakfast accommodations in Inverness with the majority of it being available to book online.
Inverness is also referred to as being the gateway to the Scottish Highlands for the simple fact that it is the hub of the Highland public transport system and an incredible amount of visitor attractions are not too far away. Possibly the best way to see them is via a tour or day trip. There are also a few city tours, such as those run by Tony Harmsworth or City Sightseeing.
A small number of tourists stay in 2 towns or cities in the Highlands say Fort William & Inverness. The town of Fort William is very popular with sports men and women especially ramblers, hill walkers and mountaineers who get their thrills climbing Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town’s center. In a similar way bed and breakfast accommodation in Fort William and like most Scotland bed and breakfast it is frequently not incredibly expensive, excellent value for money and incredibly comfortable, clean and tidy with world renowned hospitality.
One important fact you should remember is that the airport for Inverness is, approximately, 7 miles east of the city at Dalcross. You can hail a cab or catch a bus to the small and busy airport which is not very expensive. If you need maps of the area then you will find them free at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd. While you are enjoying your Inverness vacation you should make a point to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the ‘stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is immensely enjoyable.
