Frankfurt International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe and the main hub for Lufthansa Airlines. There are plenty of available flights from London and other major cities in the United Kingdom. Frankfurt International Airport has more passengers move through its terminals than any other airport in continental Europe. Frankfurt also has two underground railway systems, an above ground tram and several taxis, making getting around the city easy for visitors.

A booming metropolis, Frankfurt is Germany’s financial center. Frankfurt is the home of the German Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, and also the largest stock exchange in Europe, justifying its reputation as a worldwide financial powerhouse. Transportation and trade also play important roles in the Frankfurt economy. The city is a center for media, and employs thousands in advertising and public relations. Some of Europe’s tallest buildings can be found in Frankfurt. Like most of Germany, Frankfurt was heavily bombed during the Second World War, the damage rebuilt in a simple style common during the 1950′s. Frankfurt was also headquarters for the US Army occupation force after the war.

UK Visitors to Frankfurt will want to travel to the Main River to see the Museumsufer, center with 13 major museums devoted to natural history, applied arts, German architecture, and Jewish history. Frankfurt also hosts a thriving art and cultural scene.

When you are out seeing the sites in Frankfurt, first look for the Zeil, the city’s main shopping area. Then you will want to see the Frankfurt Opera House, the Old Opera House, St. Katherine’s Church Roemer City Hall, St. Bartholomeus’ Cathedral, and Frankfurt’s own St. Paul’s.

Frankfurt is also famous for its literary scene and hosts the annual Frankfurt Book Fair, a legendary trade event for book publishers from all over the world, celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in 2009. The most celebrated writer in the German language, Goethe, called Frankfurt home, and the city’s Frankfurt school was made famous by philosopher Theodor Adorno and others.

Also a major attraction for three days at the end of August is the Museums Riverbank Festival, which draws more than three million visitors to both the sides of the Main in the city center. Another 20 museums are located at the riverfront, staying open late during the festival. Visitors enjoy dance shows, dance shows, and shopping at booths for food, clothes, crafts, and jewelry from all around the world. The festival is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display.

The oldest folk festival in Frankfurt, however, is the Festival of Stoneware. This semi-annual takes place twice a year around Easter and at the end of September. Find it in the eastern part of the city.
